Promise Scholarship Memorandum of Understanding

The Lake Chelan “Promise” scholarship’s goal is to encourage area high school students to aspire to further their education beyond high school by providing them the opportunity while still in high school to earn scholarship funds for their post high school studies.

Scholarship Parameters:

One promise scholarship will be awarded per school (Chelan and Manson), per year; to accumulate to $2,500 upon the student’s graduation. Selected students who meet the scholarship’s guides lines earn at end of their freshman year ($500.), sophomore year ($500) and junior year ($500) and upon completing their senior year an additional ($1,000)  The scholarship is to be used for post-secondary education at accredited 4 year colleges or universities, accredited trade/technical schools or community colleges.  *Based on the availability of funding scholarship awards amounts may vary from year to year.

Selection and Criteria:

Students are nominated by school personnel and community partners at the end of their freshman year of high school. Nomination criteria for students: students with potential/ promise but who have barriers (economic or other factors) and “at risk” circumstances that may prevent them from completing high school or aspiring to seek a post high school education. The Rotary scholarship committee will interview the nominees to make the final selection.

Student Participation Expectations:

  • In order to earn scholarship funds the student must maintain an over-all 2.0 grade point average, accumulated enough credits to be considered a fully enrolled student in good standing. (No on-going discipline and attendance issues etc) and unless there are mitigating circumstances graduate on time in four years.
  • A Rotary club sponsor will be appointed to follow and interface with the student during their promise high school years.
  • Promise scholars will be included at Rotary functions, i.e. sponsor will invite sponsored students to a lunch meeting at least once a year and the student will be expected to share with the club their school progress and activities.
  • If a student drops out of the program (by leaving high school before graduation or failing to maintain GPA, credits or good standing) the scholarship funds that they have earned will be remain in the Rotary club’s Promise Scholarship fund.
  • Each year a student will submit a transcript as evidence of progress and good standing.
  • Upon acceptance of a “Promise” scholarship students and their parents/or guardians will be expected to sign a MOU with the Lake Chelan Rotary which details the conditions and terms of the scholarship.

As a promise scholar recipient I will/understand:

  • Maintain contact with my Rotary club appointed sponsor throughout my high school years.
  • Attend various Rotary functions and will to share my school progress and activities at Rotary luncheon meetings at least once at a year.
  • That if I drop out of the program (by leaving high school before graduation or failing to maintain GPA, credits or good standing) that the scholarship funds that I have earned will remain in the Rotary club’s Promise Scholarship fund.
  • Each year submit a school transcript as evidence of progress and good standing.
  • Upon graduation notify the Lake Chelan Rotary Scholarship Committee of the accredited post-secondary institution and its address that I will be attending in the up-coming academic year.
  • That the $2,500 award will be disbursed through my selected post-secondary academic institution’s financial aid office and may be used for tuition, class fees, supplies and books.
  • That unless there are mitigating circumstances, failure to follow the above guidelines will cancel my “Promise “scholarship award.

The Lake Chelan Rotary promises to:

  • Unless adequate funds are not available in the club’s “Fund” to designate and hold in reserve for  the “ Promise”  scholar $500 at the end each of their freshman,  sophomore and junior high school years and an $1000 upon graduation from high school.  The total award of $2,500 will be sent and to be disbursed through the student’s selected post-secondary academic institution’s financial aid office.
  • Unless otherwise given permission, to hold in confidence any records or shared information regarding the “Promise” scholar student.
  • Appoint a club member sponsor as a liaison with the student during their high school years.
  • Engage, encourage our “Promise” scholars and exemplify the Rotary Four Way Test:

Of the things we think, say or do…

  1. Is it the Truth?

  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
